Alternating sex scenes with the actors dressing up was a ploy by the director to keep the rating of the movie to an R rating rather than an adult X rating. Julie Christie's boyfriend at the time, Warren Beatty did not want the sex scene to be in the film and would have wanted it to be completely cut out. Do I think there was explicit sex? I think there was enough penetration to qualify as sex if either party climaxes, oral sex occurs, or some body part enters the mouth, vagina, or anal area whether intentionally or by 'accident'. In other words, after a few hours of 'acting', penises do get into vaginas quite often.

One of those scenes, were it's impossible to fake sex realistically, than to have sex & hide the genitals.
